The George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science (GW Engineering) is excited to welcome W. Scott Amey, M.S. ‘75 as the 2024 GW Engineering graduation celebration speaker. Amey, a successful engineering entrepreneur, earned his master’s in computer science from GW Engineering in 1975 and is the founder of the school’s W. Scott Amey Career Services Center.
“I’ve always been someone who believes in the power of having an impactful network,” said Amey. “This is one of the reasons I helped establish the career center within GW Engineering. I wanted to create a resource that students could use to build their career readiness and professional networks.”
Amey is a recipient of the GW Alumni Service Award and the GW Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award, and he is an inductee of the GW Engineering Hall of Fame. He currently serves on GW Engineering’s National Advisory Council and is a former member of the GW Board of Trustees.
From 2004 to 2007, Amey volunteered his time and expertise to build the school's Career Services Center with the goal of providing GW Engineering students real-time career resources and access to full time jobs, internships, mentorships, apprenticeships, career fairs, and more. The center was renamed in Amey’s honor due to his dedication to the success of GW students.
“It’s an honor to have Mr. Amey as this year’s graduation celebration speaker, not only because of his vast experience and success as an engineer, but because of his passion for preparing the next generation of innovators for their futures and connecting them with opportunities to thrive,” said GW Engineering Dean John Lach. “Mr. Amey has consistently demonstrated his belief in GW’s ability to educate and prepare our students to be leaders in their fields. He’s leveraged his personal and professional networks and dedicated his own time and expertise to create unique experiences outside of the classroom for our students, and we are lucky and honored to have him as an active member of the GW Engineering community.”
Amey has made tremendous impacts and accomplishments throughout his professional career. As one of the co-founders and the Chief Operating Officer of RS Information Systems, Amey grew the organization from 2 employees to more than 1700, and the organization realized more than $340 million in revenue. Most recently, Amey grew Amyx Inc., a federal government contracting firm, from 40 to 600 employees and to more than $120 million in revenue.
Throughout all of that success, Amey has remained strongly connected to GW Engineering and has contributed significantly to the school’s mission to prepare students to become the engineering leaders of the future.
“Some of my best memories are during my time at the career center,” said Amey. “It’s always great when you go into a situation thinking you’re going to be the person providing advice and information, and you ultimately walk away realizing that you learned valuable information yourself and have new knowledge that makes you better. I worked in the career center 2 to 3 days a week, and I truly valued the interactions with students. It was an invaluable period in my life.”
Amey hopes other GW alumni, parents, and members of the university community follow in his footsteps and support the great work of GW Engineering and the success of its amazing students.
