Dr. Igor Efimov and colleagues from Northwestern University have co-authored a study to design a temporary, battery-free pacemaker that can be broken down by the patient’s body. Their paper, “Fully implantable and bioresorbable cardiac pacemakers without leads or batteries,” was published recently in Nature Biotechnology.

This GW Today article describes the device and the potential impact that transient electronics may have on medical research. The study has also received considerable external media attention. Coverage includes articles in STATGizmodoThe GuardianSciTechDaily, and this piece from WXYZ-ABC7 (Detroit), among others.
